Hatchet & Seed - Edible Landscaping
We are so happy with the garden space that Hatchet & Seed designed and installed for us. Tayler & Tim were fantastic to work with! They took my initial ideas and designed a space that was even better than I had imagined. They were knowledgeable, professional, efficient, always willing to answer questions and make tweaks as we went. We now have a beautiful backyard garden space and are looking forward to expanding with a phase two in the future. We would highly recommend Hatchet & Seed!

Yesterday I attended their Kitchen Garden: Join the Revolution! Workshop, located at their beautiful home base in Vic West. The knowledge, skill and attention they put into their work is abundantly clear! What really impressed me is their attitude towards continuously learning new things and sharing with honesty where they've learned from their own mistakes. Having that said, they are extremely knowledgeable abut compost systems, irrigation, wicking beds (this wow'ed me!) and drainage for flooding. Their focus on staying current with what food and social trends are happening in the community is a breath of fresh air. If you're on the fence about attending one of their workshops or hiring them for home garden design, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We are thoroughly satisfied with the garden project completed for us by the Hatchet & Seed crew. The ferro cement beds were a perfect solution for our property. In addition to being functional, the completed work looks great and blends in nicely with the landscape. Communication, quality of work, attention to detail, craftsmanship and tidiness of the work site were all excellent. Highly recommended!

Tayler and crew built some beautiful raised beds out of yellow cedar, brought in the soil, installed trickle irrigation (which was so useful during the heat dome" of 2021)

Tayler and the team at Hatchet and Seed did an incredible job. We initially set up a consultation where I had all my questions answered. We took it to the next step and where they designed the space and improved my vision and finally made it come to life. They were friendly, answered questions along the way (even from my 4 year old). They cleaned up daily and gave us an AMAZING garden with drip irrigation installation. My son and I are out daily, planting seeds and enjoying watching the progress. Their craftsmanship and materials were top quality and I know we will enjoy this garden for years to come. We look forward to produce lots of food for ourselves and hopefully lots to share with our neighbors and friends! I highly recommend!

We worked with Hatched and Seed to begin transforming our yard. Our starting point was to increase our ability to grow food and to integrate pollinators and more native plants into the landscape. At our first consultation Tayler asked questions that solidified the overall vision, expanded our thinking, and helped frame the design.Tayler, Tim and the team created new beds and hardscaping in our front yard – the only space with six hours of sunshine – to support fruit trees; vegetables and pollinators. They encouraged and considered our input throughout the process and really took the time to ‘get things right’.We love the results and are looking forward to the first season for these gardens and to future work with Hatchet and Seed.

We’ve just had our inaugural tea in our beautiful cedar greenhouse built by Tayler and his team at Hatchet and Seed. The beds are full of soil, topped with leaves for the winter, and we can’t wait to start growing veggies come spring. It’s a solid quality build and Tayler was kind and responsive throughout the process. When the inevitable glitches came up we worked through them easily and quickly. We’ve since hired them for another project, and enthusiastically recommended them to others!

The Hatchet & Seed crew took our front and back yards from dull, weedy, dead grass dirt squares to flourishing, self-sustaining habitat for birds, bees, butterflies—and humans. We now have a productive berry patch amid a beautiful edible landscape, including raised beds, fruit trees, lemon grass and myriad other wonders. The entire crew was knowledgeable, friendly, adaptable, and super hardworking, an absolute pleasure to have around. The hatchet" part of the landscape

Taylor and Solara created a school garden food forest design in 2013 (as an in-kind donation). That 1/3-acre plan was a bit too grand for the school board to embrace. However, a school garden 20m x 11m garden was created in 2017… phase 1 on the plan.We did employ Hatchet and Seed when considering an orchard expansion. With middle school students (11 to 14 years old) in 2021, Hn’S created 2 long, large ferro-cement planters as part of the Colquitz Orchard. We planted 3 apple trees, 3 stone pines (pine-nuts) a chock cherry, black current and autumn olive. They also added the much-needed irrigation to keep everything alive. Cleverly, Taylor suggested adding 4 brackets for benches to be added on the downhill slope of the planters… those seats are used year-round by the students and the neighbouring community! Then again in 2022, the Hatchet and Seed team worked with students to create another V-shaped planter. It will have more fruit trees added this fall. This time they even donated their time and materials to provide irrigation to the new ferro-cement bed. This was very appreciated, and we are very thankful for this beautiful addition to the campus. Come by Colquitz Middle School and see for yourself!
